2026.02 On the Discussion Around BIP-110 and the Potential Role of Fractal
Recently, discussion around the BIP-110 proposal has been gaining momentum within the community. The proposal suggests that “temporarily limit the size of data fields at the consensus level, in order to correct distorted incentives caused by standardizing support for arbitrary data, and to refocus priorities on improving Bitcoin as money”.
We believe that discussions of this nature are themselves a reflection of Bitcoin’s strength as a decentralized consensus system. Over the past decade, the Bitcoin network has consistently allowed different philosophies and technical approaches to coexist. From the SegWit2x debate in 2017 to the subsequent Bitcoin Cash fork, the system has demonstrated its ability to evolve in the presence of disagreement.
At present, the signaling ratio for BIP-110 appears to be trending upward. According to publicly available data:
- January 25, 2026: 2.98% (729 / 24,482 nodes)
- February 23, 2026: 7.99% (1,995 / 24,981 nodes)

This represents an increase of approximately 5% within one month. Whether the proposal will eventually reach the activation threshold remains uncertain and requires continued observation.
In this context, we believe that products and services within the Bitcoin ecosystem should remain technically prepared for multiple possible outcomes, rather than taking emotional positions or assuming a predetermined result.
Fractal’s Design Intention and Positioning
One of the core design objectives of Fractal Bitcoin is to provide an environment capable of supporting richer state expression and data capacity, without altering Bitcoin’s mainnet consensus rules.
If, in the future, the mainnet were to introduce stricter consensus-level limitations on certain data types, Fractal could serve as a technically compatible extension layer, offering a fallback path for asset state continuity.
As we have previously discussed:
Censorship on Bitcoin has always been a clear and specific threat to Ordinals. If one day Bitcoin’s maintainers were to adopt the position that “Ordinals are spam and should be blocked in future versions”, Fractal Bitcoin would be able to perfectly mirror all inscriptions from the Bitcoin mainnet—with only about a 1/38 increase in data size.
It is important to emphasize:
- Fractal is not a replacement fork.
- It is not an adversarial response to mainnet decisions.
- Nor does it presuppose any particular governance outcome.
Its role is better understood as a buffer extension layer—providing continuity safeguards for assets during different stages of consensus evolution.
On the “Temporary Restriction” Scenario
BIP-110 is described as a one-year temporary restriction.
Under such a scenario, if certain assets were constrained on the mainnet, Fractal could function as a temporary hosting environment. If the restriction were lifted after one year, those assets could return to the Bitcoin mainnet.
The specific technical implementation pathways require further research and refinement. However, the guiding principles are clear:
- Do not alter mainnet consensus.
- Do not enforce migration.
- Do not create market panic.
- Simply provide optionality.
Our Position
As ecosystem participants, we respect whatever consensus outcome Bitcoin ultimately reaches.
Regardless of the direction BIP-110 takes, the health of the ecosystem should not be built on opposition, but on technical preparedness and rational discussion.
Fractal’s existence is not intended to manufacture division, but to provide technical flexibility in moments where divergence may arise.

2.98%(729 / 24482 nodes)
7.99%(1995 / 24981 nodes)

Fractal
Fractal Bitcoin
- Fractal
