Yesterday, we joined Utexo for a Space discussing what USDT could bring to Bitcoin. Thanks to @utexocom, @VIhnatiuk, and everyone who participated in the conversation!
We’d like to share some additional thoughts on why this integration matters to UniSat, what we’re currently working on, and where we hope to go next.
Why USDT on Bitcoin Matters
Since 2023, UniSat has been building infrastructure for Bitcoin-native assets, including Ordinals, BRC-20, Runes, Alkanes, and others.
Over the years, we’ve seen tremendous innovation in asset issuance, trading, and programmability on Bitcoin. However, one important piece has been missing: a widely adopted stablecoin that can interact with these assets within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Today, hundreds of Bitcoin-native assets exist, but there are still limited ways for them to connect directly with real-world economic activities without moving to other networks.
We believe bringing USDT back to Bitcoin could help change that.
It could provide a familiar unit of account, improve liquidity for Bitcoin-native assets, and create opportunities for payments, trading, DeFi, gaming, and many other applications.
We’re also particularly interested in what this could mean for AI agents. An agent could accumulate BTC as a store of value while using USDT to pay for services and interact with the real world, without constantly moving between different blockchains.
Bitcoin doesn’t need to become another Ethereum. It needs to become a more prosperous ecosystem and a more complete Bitcoin.
And we believe stablecoins could be one of the important missing pieces.
Our Roadmap: From Wallet Support to a Connected Bitcoin Economy
Our collaboration with Utexo is focused on making USDT a practical and accessible asset within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
We are approaching this in three stages.
Stage 1: USDT Integration — UniSat Wallet and UniScan
Our immediate priority is to bring RGB-based USDT support to UniSat Wallet and UniScan.
For wallet users, the goal is straightforward: to receive, send, and manage USDT alongside BTC, Ordinals, Runes, and other Bitcoin-native assets. UniScan, our explorer for the Bitcoin network, will also provide users with a clear view of their USDT assets and related activities within the UniSat ecosystem.
Unlike most of the protocols we’ve supported previously, where asset state can be reconstructed through blockchain indexing, RGB introduces a different architecture based on client-side validation.
This provides important advantages for privacy and scalability, but also creates new responsibilities for wallet developers. Some of the key challenges we’re addressing include:
- State management: Maintaining and updating RGB asset state efficiently, including incremental synchronization.
- Backup and recovery: Ensuring users can reliably recover their assets and associated validation data when switching devices or restoring wallets.
- Data integrity and security: Keeping locally maintained asset information consistent, verifiable, and secure.
- User experience: Making USDT transfers straightforward without requiring users to understand the complexity of RGB.
Another important part of this work is asset authenticity. As a direct partner of Tether, Utexo plays an important role in the infrastructure supporting officially issued USDT on Bitcoin. We are integrating Utexo’s APIs and services to help users reliably identify and verify authentic USDT assets.
Our priority is not simply to make USDT transactions possible. We want to build a solid, secure, and reliable implementation that users and developers can depend on.
Stage 2: Trading Bitcoin native assets with USDT — UniHexa
Once wallet and explorer support is in place, our next step will be to bring USDT trading to UniHexa.
For users, this would mean being able to trade supported Bitcoin-native assets against USDT and hold a dollar-denominated balance between trades within UniHexa.
For the broader market, USDT trading pairs could give assets across different Bitcoin protocols access to a common quote currency. Combined with liquidity provision and convenient ways to bring USDT into the ecosystem, this could help make those markets more accessible.
This is where we see a practical role for UniHexa: bringing USDT and Bitcoin-native assets into the same trading experience.
As support expands, security and compliance infrastructure will also remain part of our work. UniHexa already integrates KYT capabilities, and we’ll continue working with partners on mechanisms appropriate to each product and protocol, taking their privacy properties into account.
Stage 3: Beyond Trading: New Possibilities for Bitcoin Applications
Beyond wallet support and trading, we want to work with developers to explore how USDT can be used across more Bitcoin applications.
A shared medium of exchange could support payments, financial services, games, and other applications. Connecting these use cases will still require integration work across protocols and products; a common currency is only one part of that foundation.
We’re particularly interested in AI agents. An agent could hold BTC while using USDT to pay for services, potentially managing both through Bitcoin-based infrastructure. Making that useful will require reliable developer tools, payment integrations, and services that accept those payments. It’s an area we hope to explore with other builders.
Looking Ahead
During the Space, Utexo shared its plans for a phased USDT rollout, starting with institutional liquidity and exchange support before expanding to retail users.
Our immediate focus is completing the wallet and UniScan integration, followed by UniHexa trading. We’ll share concrete milestones as implementation progresses.
Supporting Bitcoin’s different asset protocols has taught us that each comes with its own architecture and integration challenges. As we progress with RGB and USDT integration, we’re also happy to share our technical experience, lessons learned, and implementation insights with other wallets and development teams. We hope this can help reduce duplicated work and make it easier for more projects to support USDT on Bitcoin.
Ultimately, our goal remains the same: to make Bitcoin and its growing ecosystem of assets easier to access, use, and build upon.
Bitcoin’s long-term potential goes well beyond digital gold.
Bringing USDT to Bitcoin could be an important step toward making Bitcoin useful for a much broader range of real-world economic activities.
We’re excited to work with @utexocom and other ecosystem builders to make that happen.
